EN 1645-compliant, these are the smaller brothers of the double steps above, but are made to the same high standards. They look as though they will take a lot of traffic and still look good. The only caution is that they are so good, it might be worth attaching them to a caravan with a sturdy bike lock.
Verdict: Small and perfectly formed.

Available in three sizes - original, large and giant - and fully EN 1645 approved, this is a premium quality product. Made from high-quality aluminium, the joints are screwed or riveted - the way aircraft are put together - and they are light, very strong and extremely stable. The steps are well finished with no sharp edges, the two tiers also mean that access is made easier. EDITOR'S CHOICE
Verdict: Well built and sturdy, these steps will last the distance.

Milenco aluminium steps have lead the market since their launch in 1996. Proving this, in a recent court case, a dutch company who had counterfitted a Milenco step, defence was that the design was so perfect and could not be improved upon, they should be allowed to copy it - they lost the case.

STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
Tripping on caravan steps is the single greatest cause of injury to caravanners. One in 10 broken limbs that occur on touring holidays comes as a result of people slipping off or tripping up on caravan steps.
Your step needs to be stable, strong and durable. Ideally it should also be capable of being stowed safely in the van without causing any damage if it bumps against woodwork and, most importantly, should give you easy and safe entry and exit.
To ensure you are safe, the step that comes with your new van must meet an EU standard, EN 1645. Under this regulation it must be able to carry a load of up to 200kg and to be made in such a way that this load (you) won't slide off it in the rain.
However, these regulations don't apply to the after-market - but rest assured all Milenco steps meet the mechanical requirements of EN 1645. This approval covers the very minimum standard that steps should adhere to yet many aftermarket steps currently available from other manufacturers deformed under the weight of a 101kg Practical Caravan magazine tester.
You'll find no steps with handrails here (Practical Caravan magazine test November 2003). Originally aimed at those with limited mobility, these can be dangerous because the added leverage of the rail being gripped makes the steps prone to tipping. A better solution is the graded step with two or three risers (Milenco double steps, for example) which you mount while holding the inside of the van door.
The other steps Practical Caravan would approach with caution are those where the base is almost the same size as the step. All Milenco models have a base much larger than the step so standing on the edge presents virtually no chance of the step tipping over.
